Facebook Messenger adds new features as user-base explodes in popularity

Ever since Facebook started forcing people to download its Messenger app, the service has – as you might expect – seen tremendous growth. Earlier this year, the app hit 800 million active users, and now it’s closing in a billion people. According to internal data, the service now boasts 900 million active monthly users who send over one billion messages each month.

The company announced the news this week in a blog post focusing on new business-friendly features. Facebook Messenger is rolling out a bunch of new features to make it easier to interact with businesses. To start, each business will get a unique username, which is displayed prominently at the top of its Facebook Page just above the “Send a message” button.

Facebook is also rolling out Messenger Links, which will instantly launch a direct conversation with a specific business. The company also plans to offer new Messenger Codes. These are special images you can scan with your smartphone camera to open a new chat window, similar to the QR code identifiers used by Snapchat.

Once you launch a Messenger thread with a business, you may be greeted with a personalized pre-written greeting. From there, you can ask questions about the company, set up an appointment or get customer service.

You should start to see the new Messenger features soon.
