Suicide Squad has officially been rated PG-13

When Task Force X take over cinemas later this summer, they won’t be quite as horrible as their comic personalities suggest. The Motion Picture Association of America this week gave Suicide Squad an official PG-13 rating, which means the movie might be a little tamer than fans were hoping for.

Of course, director David Ayer has always said the studio was aiming for a lower rating because that was their goal all along. It’s nice to know that Ayer stuck to his original vision and wasn’t swayed by the success of Fox’s Deadpool, which was rated R.

In April, Ayer said despite going for PG-13, the film still has plenty of edge and attitude. “And it’s got its own voice… There’s a lot in the film that’s going to surprise people,” Ayer explained. Fair enough. A movie doesn’t have to be rated-R to be good.

Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 5.
