And now for the most ridiculous bit of movie news you’ll hear all day: During Suicide Squad rehearsals, the actors literally fought each other. Not because they were angry; it was simply part of the process. The whole thing sounds like the plot to Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club.
“I had them fight each other,” Ayer told Yahoo! Movies. “You learn a lot about who a person really is when you punch them in the face.” Hm, okay.
Now for the slightly less crazy bit: Jared Leto’s Joker, who looks like he probably drinks Monster energy drinks during breakfast, has a big backstory, and the inspiration comes from an unexpected source.
“If a guy like him really existed today, where would he come from?” asked David Ayer. “How would he do business? Who would he know? What would he look like? In my mind, I took a lot of inspiration from drug lords on Instagram. It’s a great way to understand the lifestyle of a villain.”
So a character steeped in years of DC Comics history has suddenly been reinvented using inspiration from drug dealers who share their lifestyles through a social media platform owned by Facebook. Got it.
Ayer went on to explain that the Joker’s tattoos also “tell a specific story.”
“There’s very specific stories and easter eggs in those tattoos,” Ayer said. “And even his teeth, there’s an entire story behind that which is absolutely canon. It’s putting his history on his body. This Joker is a little more working class, who I believe could live in our world.”
