2020 Kia Soul: This Is Most Of It

The Kia Soul is a good car. It’s practical, it’s boxy, it’s weird, and while it’s hardly a hot hatch or an enthusiast’s car, it can be pretty fun to drive under the right circumstances. That’s why I’m glad Kia didn’t second-generation-Scion-xB the Soul, and appear to be sticking with what works for this new one.

The Soul is getting a total overhaul for 2020, sharing a platform with the new Hyundai Kona. While we haven’t seen it in all its glory yet, we will at the LA Auto Show next week, and the teasers that Kia’s dropped so far reveal… well, most of it.

It’s still a box, but it has a more creative D-pillar design and what looks like a narrower front grille and headlamps. Beyond that it’s expected to be the pragmatic, fun, affordable box that many of us have come to appreciate over the past few years.

Kia says the new Soul will be offered with two choices of four-cylinder engines: a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter or a turbocharged 1.6-liter. The latter is the sportier one and can be had with a seven-speed DCT. An electric version is also coming soon.
