Torment: Tides of Numenera coming to Steam Early Access this month

Torment: Tides of Numenera was at one point the record holder for the largest Kickstarter game in the website’s history. A little game called Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night put an end to that, but inXile Entertainment’s RPG has the distinction of holding the record for the longest period of time.

The game, which hyped itself as a spiritual successor to the cult-classic PC RPG Planescape: Torment, was funded to the tune of $4 million+ back in March 2013, and backers will finally get their first chance to go hands-on with it this month on Steam Early Access.

The beta for backers will be launching on Jan. 17 followed by the Early Access release, which will be available from Jan. 26. inExile says that it will cover the game’s opening segment and grant access to the first location, the Sagus Cliffs.

Sagus is a very old city that was built on top of ancient structures that predate the return of humanity to the Ninth World. It’s split into five main districts: Circus Minor, Cliff’s Edge, Caravanserai, Government Square and the Underbelly. As you might expect from a city location, it is rich in lore to discover, characters to talk with and obviously quests to complete!

This marks inExile’s second major Kickstarter release following the success of Wasteland 2. It’s also one of the first games I backed, right alongside Shovel Knight. No release date for the final version has been set yet, but we should know more if the Steam Early Access version proves to be a success.
