Before Apollo 8, the farthest anyone had been from earth was about 850 miles. Fifty-one years ago today, Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders launched atop a Saturn V rocket on a journey that would take them nearly a quarter of a million miles away, where they would orbit the moon ten times and capture one of the most famous photographs in history.
