Circuit Of The Americas' Turn 1 Is A Real Motherfucker

My favorite vantage point at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas is overlooking Turn 1, the blind uphill left immediately after the front straight. It’s a notoriously tough corner and I love watching how different drivers (and in the case of MotoGP this weekend, riders) take their lines there. It doesn’t always end well.

This grand prix was a crashy mess for several riders, but one of the more notable incidents involved Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso and Dani Pedrosa of Honda.

As you can see in this shitty video (almost certain to get pulled by Dorna, so enjoy while you can) Pedrosa dropped his bike coming hot into Turn 1, which then slid into Dovizioso and knocked him off his bike.

Thankfully both riders were unhurt, though Dovizioso was clearly stunned when Pedrosa ran over to check on him.

They weren’t the only ones with bad luck at COTA during an eventful, exciting race—albeit one that ended the way everyone expected. A full recap is coming soon.
