Comment of the Day: Yes or No to Flat-Bottom Steering Wheels?

Comment Of The DayYour good comments.

The 2018 Audi A4 Ultra Edition comes with a fancy flat-bottomed steering wheel. We should be asking ourselves: does that matter?

I bring this up because of a thought-provoking comment by reader Eddie Brannan:

I’ve never given this too much thought. It definitely tends to be a premium option on more upscale, sporty cars, or a standard one on a lot of performance cars. It looks cool, I guess. Does it really make a substantial difference to the driving experience?

I’d wager almost certainly not. I get it on race cars, certainly; it helps a driver squeeze into a super-tight cockpit and still have, you know, legs. But on a street car? Almost certainly for aesthetics.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that! If you dig the way it looks, enjoy. There just don’t seem to be tons of practical benefits beyond that. Or am I missing something here?

Let’s discuss. Are you pro- or anti-flat-bottom wheels?
