Facebook wants to turn your face into emoji

Facebook is always testing out interesting new features and updates in the News Feed or Messenger. Now a new patent could reveal one clever way the company hopes to personalize your conversations by turning your face into an emoji.

The patent describes a system for transforming typed emoticons into photos of your face. Basically, Facebook would scan your words for emoticons and identify the relevant emotion. Then the company could use its facial recognition technology to pick a picture of your face from its archives that matches that emotion.

It’s a clever idea that could encourage people to use Facebook and Messenger even more, though it may also run into some issues. Facebook may have some of the best facial recognition software around, but it probably wouldn’t be perfect right off the bat. Still, even if the new feature occasionally comes up with a comically incorrect photo that might just add to the overall experience.

Of course, this is just a patent so we wouldn’t get too excited until Facebook actually starts testing a similar feature. For now, we’re still stuck using regular emojis, GIFs, stickers and plain old words to express our emotions.
