Final Fantasy XV taps beloved song Stand By Me for its Uncovered trailer

Oh Square Enix. How are you gonna do that to me. I’ve been poking fun at trailers falling into this goofy trend of putting pop songs in trailers, and then Square Enix just has to knock one out of the park. It has tapped the Ben E. King classic Stand By Me, performed by Florence and the Machine, to help pitch Final Fantasy XV to gamers.

At least it makes sense in the context of the game. The game heavily revolves around the idea of the connection between family and friends, and I’m not sure if there is a better song in the history of music that better captures the importance of relationships between humans.

Plus it’s a story about four wayward boys, their car, and a road trip of self-discovery. Excellent choice, and the cover is great too!

The song starts at the 1:00 minute mark of the trailer, but you would miss out on the excellent summon animations and high-octane action of the first half if you were to skip to it. Do yourself a favor and watch the whole thing.

Final Fantasy XV is looking better and better each time we see it, and now with an emotional centerpiece to it all, I’m thinking that this is the real deal. It launches on Sept. 30 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
