Find the Cheapest Destinations For That Last-Minute Trip

When it comes to taking vacations, we all have those bucket list destinations that we know we want to visit. That said, sometimes you also just need to get away for a long weekend and almost anywhere will do. Anywhere that isn’t going to break the bank, of course.

MIT’s Senseable City Lab recently launched a new interactive map to help answer the question of where you should actually travel to for that last-minute getaway. As reported by Fast Company, the tool has you input your hometown and your travel dates, and then produces an interactive map with how much it’s likely to cost you to travel to destinations around the world.

The map itself is color-coded, with green dots on cities where you can fly the cheapest and red dots on the most expensive destinations. Between the two are shades of yellow and orange, representing the flights that hit the middle ground.

The pricing for the next few weeks is obviously skewed a bit high thanks to the holidays, so I did a quick search for January 11-14. The site recommended a ton of spots in the United States, of course, but there are actually a decent number of spots in Europe that qualify for that greenish designation as well.

A flight to Cork, Ireland, for instance, is around $650 for that weekend. Yes, that’s more expensive than the $200 flight the site lists to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and isn’t exactly “cheap,” but it is intriguing. I would have thought a last-minute round-trip flight from SF to Ireland would have been considerably more expensive and wouldn’t have even considered it.

Beyond the map of everything, the site also lets you filter results by your specific budget and where you can fly direct (a must when you have a limited amount of time).
