From Software working on three new games, Dark Souls put on hiatus

From Software is opening up about its plans for the coming years, and the Dark Souls franchise will not be popping up again in the foreseeable future.

In an interview with 4Gamer, President Hidetaka Miyazaki confirmed that three new games were in development at the studio. Twitter account Xenosaga translates these internally developed titles as a game with a “similar setting to Dark Souls,” a series reboot, and something entirely new.

Project 1: ARPG with dark fantasy setting similar to DS

Project 2: A reboot/new idea from previous franchise

Project 3: something new

If we’re talking reboot, what else could it be besides From Software’s former most popular franchise, Armored Core?

Armored Core

As for Dark Souls, Miyazaki says that the team needs a break from it for reasons that the studio never wanted to be “the Dark Souls” company.

With this latest release, we’re going to put the Dark Souls series on hold for a while. This is because it was never our real motive for From Software to be the Dark Souls-only company.

When asked about plans for the future, Miyazaki neither gave a definitive yes or a no.

It’s not my intention to say that the [Souls] series is completely finished

I’m all for Dark Souls taking a break. It could only do its shtick for so long before it became the stale, repetitive, AAA beast that we all like to think the series rescued us from.

Keep an eye out for From Software’s other games at the press conferences. Either Sony or Microsoft would be happy to play host to the reputable studio.
