There’s a lot of talk about how fall is the official season of “sweater weather.” And that’s fine, we all love fall—it’s the prom king of seasons. But spring, a season that requires true dressing dexterity, is actually true peak sweater weather. You get cool mornings and strong breezes, and as the days get longer and you’re out later (on a date, perhaps?), you need another layer. That perfect mix of breezy and cozy—something a little more relaxed than a jacket. You need a sweater.

Specifically, spring calls for a lightweight sweater in fabrics like cotton, linen and silk—you can have a sweater woven with a blend of all three, actually! (More on that later…) These breathable, natural fibers make a knit just warm enough for those fleeting, perfect days before the heat of summer sets in.

And there’s just something about a spring sweater that reflect the colors of the season as well as the temperature—so take a look at these SG-approved knits in cheerful, wearable hues.

J.Crew Cotton Crewneck Sweater, $50

When I first saw this sweater, in a sunwashed shade of sage green, I almost mistook it for a sweatshirt. The fit is so relaxed and the model looks so casually put-together—what more could you want from a spring-y cotton knit?! I’ll tell you what! An affordable price point (that frequently goes on sale) and more than 12 colors to choose from. Whether you’re a “pale burgundy” or a “cool palm” guy, you’ll find yourself throwing this baby on with jeans, shorts, chinos, or even your swim trunks come Memorial Day weekend…

Bonobos Lightweight Rugby Sweater, $108

Ugh, Bonobos just makes me so happy sometimes. I have so many warm, fuzzy, slightly thirsty feelings about this color-block sweater. It’s the handsome love child of a knit polo (honk honk, not backing down from that one, guys!) and a classic rugby shirt. It hits my personal sweet spot of mid-century retro and Vampire Weekend-level prep. It’s a knit you can wear like a shirt, and in fact I love how Bonobos styled it with sage green chino shorts and leather loafers.

Club Monaco Baseball Collar Sweater, $119 (on sale!)

It feels like nobody’s really talking about Club Monaco these days, and that’s a shame. They make some really nice stuff that can be categorized as “youthfully sophisticated,” and at a surprisingly decent price point to boot. The color of this henley-esque sweater isn’t really anything to write home about, but hello, it’s a henley… sweater! The flattering fit (makes your pecs look amaze and shoulders more broad) will do all the talking for you. And it will say, “Behold, I’m dressed perfectly for this 58 degree evening and why yes, I have been working out!”

H&M Cotton Raglan-Sleeve Sweater, $25

Well lookie what we have here…a nice-looking marled sweater in 100% cotton that’s ridiculously affordable! It comes in seven colors, but the “dark pink mélange” (okay, H&M!) has become an office favorite because it stands out in just the right way. Layer this over an OCDB when you catch a chill on the sailboat or toss it on with your Lululemon shorts on your bodega this weekend—it’s versatile enough to do both.

And finally, because I’m the worst (but also the best, obv), I need you to consider this low-key luxe Ralph Lauren cardigan. The southwestern pattern gives me “New Light”-era John Mayer crossed with The Big Lebowski vibes. Over a white t-shirt and jeans, at sunset, with a Negroni in hand? Chef’s kiss perfection! You can blame (justify?) the bananas price point on the fabric content—a luscious, breathable blend of cotton, linen and silk. Just get it! For me!
