Here’s The First Caution Not For Weather In This Two-Day-Long NASCAR Race

The NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway has been kind of like a two-day marathon, but not in the Rolex 24 Hours way. Rain just keeps washing out the race, so much so that you get psychologically conditioned to think that every caution is for a damp track. But this one wasn’t, for once.

After being postponed from Friday night due to weather, the Xfinity race got underway on Saturday and almost immediately went back under rain delay. Other than a stage break, all of the cautions—and resulting lengthy red flags—up until this wreck were for weather.

Once everything got underway, though, the typical Daytona wreckage did as well. It looks like Cole Custer wiggled a little in the pack just past halfway in the race, causing several cars behind him, including 2016 series champion Daniel Suarez, to stack up and speed toward an interior wall.

The cars then took a shortcut through pit road and the infield grass, resulting in a mess of sheet metal and landscaping:

There’s since been a bit more wrecking, but it looks like the race may finally make its full distance. With just 10 laps to go and NASCAR’s rule that races are official once past halfway, let’s hope rain doesn’t swoop in and spoil things.
