Apple will make some small but significant changes to its iTunes user interface with the version 12.4 update to make the application easier to use and navigate. Leaked screenshots reveals a persistent sidebar, simpler menus, and a revamped mini player.
iTunes 12.4 was supposed to arrive alongside OS X 10.11.4, but ended up being delayed, according to MacRumors, which obtained these screenshots. It is now expected to make its debut “in the near future,” bringing lots of design tweaks.
The app doesn’t look hugely different at first glance, but you’ll notice a persistent sidebar on its left side that makes it easier to access the different sections within various media categories — such as albums, songs, genres, and artists within music.
A drop-down menu lets users switch between music, movies, TV shows, audiobooks, and other content.
“Like the current menu, the new menu is customizable, so sections of iTunes that are not used can be hidden from view,” MacRumors adds. “Forward and back buttons can be used to navigate between different sections.”
Apple has also simplified its menus to make them easier to understand, and added new shortcut options that will let you jump into various sections of iTunes in a snap. The mini player has also received some “slight” tweaks, which make the Up Next track more visible.
It’s not totally clear when iTunes 12.4 will be available to all, but the source who provided these screenshots suggested we will see it in late May or early June. Apple may preview it at WWDC, but the changes may not be significant enough for stage time.
