Jurassic World 2 finally has a director

With Colin Trevorrow all tied up with Star Wars: Episode IX, who is going to direct the upcoming Jurassic World sequel? According to the Hollywood Reporter, that person is J.A. Bayona, a Spanish filmmaker whose breakout Hollywood film was The Impossible.

Okay, so Bayona’s body of work, at least in the eyes of Western audiences, isn’t exactly extensive, but bringing a fresh face into the fray could add a new dimension to the Jurassic Park universe. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are both expected to return for the sequel.

Bayona has also contributed his directing talents to a few episode of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful and is releasing another intriguing movie called A Monster Calls later this year. You can watch the trailer for that right here.

Given Bayona’s previous work, there are possibilities for the Jurassic World sequel to go a little darker than its predecessor, which was a straight-up action movie and less of a thriller like the very first Jurassic Park. With a box office gross of over $1.6 billion, I’m sure the formula won’t stray too far from the first, but I don’t think anyone will mind if a few more horror elements are thrown in.

Jurassic World 2 is currently scheduled for a June 22, 2018 release.
