Justice League movie villain isn’t who you think

Soon after Batman v Superman hit theaters, Warner Bros. released a mysterious deleted scene depicting Lex Luthor in a crashed Kryptonian ship. In it, Luthor is seen silently hanging out with an alien, who appears to be in possession of several Mother Boxes—and then the scene abruptly ends. When the scene was released, many assumed it was a big hint at the imminent arrival of Darkseid in Justice League Part One, but a new report claims that’s not the case at all.

Potential spoilers are ahead.

According to Birth Movies Death, the alien seen with Luthor is indeed Steppenwolf, who will supposedly be Justice League’s big bad villain. Apparently Darkseid won’t be a huge threat in the upcoming film though he will have a part to play; whether he’ll arise as the main baddie in Justice League Part Two remains to be seen, but don’t expect him to be a staple anytime soon.

If true, it makes the omission of the scene from the theatrical release all the more strange. Not only that but all the subtle hints to Darkseid—especially that Omega symbol in Batman’s nightmare—were apparently just misdirection.

In the comics, Steppenwolf is the uncle of Darkseid and leads the military of Apokolips. He wields an energy ax and rides a hover bike. However, given he looked drastically different in Batman v Superman compared to how he looks in the comics, it’s unclear if his hover bike will be part of his cinematic persona.

Birth Movies Death claims the character will be incredibly powerful in the movie and require the Justice League to seek help from a “dead friend.” Of course, none of this has been confirmed by Warner Bros., but since the deleted scene already shows Luthor colluding with Steppenwolf, this rumor might not be that far-fetched.

Justice League Part One hits theaters on Nov. 17, 2017.
