Apple is finally giving Mac users the ability to rearrange third-party menu bar items in its upcoming macOS Sierra update. Until now, we’ve been able to rearrange Apple’s own menu bar items — but not those from other apps.
“Indeed, the macOS Sierra beta makes it possible for Mac users to rearrange third-party menu bar (NSStatusItems) extras, and that’s kind of a big deal,” explains 9to5Mac. “Previously, users have had to rely on third-party utilities, like Bartender.”
Bartender is a terrific app, but it’s also a waste if all you want to do is rearrange your menu bar icons. Having the ability to do this by default in macOS Sierra is a change that a lot of Mac owners will welcome.
One thing you can’t do in macOS Sierra is hide or disable those menu bar icons. However, most apps allow you to do this within their own preferences.
macOS Sierra will rollout to all this fall as a free upgrade for compatible Macs. An early beta is already available for registered developers, but it is not recommended for primary Macs. It’s likely Apple will offer a public beta when macOS is more stable.
