A sinkhole about the diameter of a street opened up in San Antonio last night, swallowing two cars. Emergency vehicles are currently trying to get the cars out of the hole.

The sinkhole, which is holding about 12 feet of water, was most likely caused by a sewer line rupture during a rainstorm, reports WDSU News. The fire department, local water crews and the police department are working to remove two cars stuck in the hole, one of them being over 90 percent under water.
Fire Chief Charles Hood said, “Both cars are going to be a challenge to get out.” Police confirmed that the person trapped in the submerged car, Dora Linda Nishihara, was killed, reports San Antonio Express-News. She was a Bexar County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

Allegedly, one of the other people who drove into the hole was a 60-year-old man who was helped by a man and a woman. They were also rescued and hospitalized with minor injuries.
Officials were able to hook a crane onto one of the submerged cars to try and pull it out of the hole. Both of the cars are probably filled with “gravel, dirt and other debris along with the water,” according to Hood.
The San Antonio Fire Department Battalion Chief, Brian O’Neil, told San Antonio Express-News that, “the ground around the sinkhole is unstable and can collapse at any moment. If a person fell in the sinkhole, they’d be swept underground.”
