Meet Piper, Pixar’s newest short film

Before audiences go in search of Dory’s family in Pixar’s Finding Dory, the studio will treat viewers to a brand new short, titled Piper. The story, revealed by Entertainment Weekly, was inspired by sandpipers you’d find on any California beach.

“Seeing the way these sandpipers react to waves and run, I always felt, ‘Gosh, that’s a film, that’s a character,’” said Alan Barillaro, director of Piper. “It’s always fun to show a world we’re familiar with but from a different perspective. We’ve all been to the beach, but have we ever viewed water from just an inch off the sand? That could be very [scary] from a bird’s perspective.”

Barillaro said he showed some early tests to Finding Dory director Andrew Stanton and then to John Lasseter, and the two were so impressed they encouraged him to create an entire short. Now it’s playing in front of a summer blockbuster.

“It was important to me to stay in the kid world and see the world from Piper’s eyes, and not be from the human perspective,” Barillaro explained.

That right there sums up Pixar’s culture and a big reason why the studio’s films are so popular. You’ll get your chance to see Piper when it plays in front of Finding Dory on June 17.
