Netflix orders Punisher spinoff from Marvel

It’s happening: I get to write The Punisher in italics. When he was just a character on Marvel’s Daredevil show, he was just the Punisher, but now Marvel has ordered a spin-off series starring the gun-toting vigilante, so he’s The Punisher.

It makes sense. Even before we’d seen Daredevil season 2, there was already rumor that he’d get his own show. Then the show hit, and he was the best part of an already solid season.

Jon Bernthal will, of course, reprise his role as the titular character. Steve Lightfoot, who previously worked on Hannibal, will step into the role of showrunner. Lightfoot clearly isn’t afraid of gruesome imagery, so we could see a properly brutal version of Marvel’s meanest protagonist.

This makes six series in Marvel’s Netflix Universe; Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, the ensemble show The Defenders, andThe Punisher. There’s no word on when the show will hit. The MNU is already getting packed, but if Bernthal’s portrayal of the character is popular enough, he could push something like Iron Fist or The Defenders back a bit.

Entertainment Weekly, which first broke the story, says Marvel and Netflix are set to reveal the project formally later today.
