Pacific Rim 2 director teases mysterious door in new set photo

It’s been over three years since Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim displayed the massive battle between the man-made Jaegers and other-worldly Kaiju. It was pure awesomeness, and after years of pining for a sequel, it was finally greenlit and began shooting a few weeks ago. Very little is known about the sequel, titled Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, but we’re beginning to learn more and more by the day with new pictures of the set.

Director Steven DeKnight recently posted a mysterious picture on Instagram of a badass door. The door looks like an industrial (just slightly cooler) bank safe door meant to protect something very important. Is it a special Jaeger? Or a Kaiju carcass? Might it even be a living Kaiju? We don’t know, but it’s fun to speculate.

What’s behind this awesome door? You’ll have to see #PacificRim2 to find out. #onset

The only details we do know at the moment is that the story will revolve around Stacker Pentecost’s son, played by Star Wars alum John Boyega. Idris Alba portrayed the no-nonsense Pentecost in the first film.

Gigantic robots versus monster—what’s not to love?

The first movie revolved around creatures called Kaiju, arriving on Earth through an inter-dimensional portal in the Pacific Ocean. Humans, forced to combat these monsters or face extinction, created “monsters of their own” called Jaegers, gigantic robots controlled by two pilots.

Pacific Maelstrom will be in theaters February 23, 2018.
