Porsche’s Most Reviled Creation Makes A Fantastic Rally Car

“It’s an Audi reject,” Generic Internet Commenter says of the Porsche 924, still frothing at the mouth over 996 headlamps. “Just a stupid Volkswagen,” another chimes in, taking a break from talking pointless e-smack to Corvette owners. Yeah, well, you know what Audi and Volkswagen are good at? Rallying.

While I love its sleek looks and nimble handling, the Porsche 924 is arguably the most hated Porsche ever—an underpowered Volkswagen Group Frankenproject.

Worse yet, the 924 was water-cooled at a time when Porsche purists were clinging to dear life to air-cooling, which I can’t blame them for, given my 944’s tendency to mark its spot with green puddles. People who have a soft spot for the 914—the cute, cheap little roadster so budget-conscious that it was marketed as a Volkswagen in its home market—even find a way to dump on the 914.

It’s the cheap Porsche, therefore, all the snobs who are somehow A-OK with gross blob known as the Panamera also tend to argue that the 924 sucks.

No, the 924 is the car that can’t get ahead outside of its own pocket of water-cooled transaxle car fans. Even then, the guys who bought a 928 or 944 will say they bought a more powerful Porsche for a reason. But my goodness, this thing makes a fantastic rally car. Eat it, haters.

Here’s a rally-prepped 924 doing course sweep duty at Rally Barbórka, hooning it up to make sure it’s all clear out on course. It’s loud. It’s rowdy. It’s everything the Porsche world needs more of, and it is my spirit animal.
