  • Teddy Bridgewater, a former Pro Bowl quarterback who suffered a devastating knee injury that caused him to miss the past two seasons, signed a new deal offering only $500,000 in guaranteed money.
  • It’s a significantly smaller sum than what other quarterbacks from Bridgewater’s draft class have received this past offseason.

Teddy Bridgewater, who recently signed with the New York Jets, received only $500,000 in guaranteed money from the Jets, according to ESPN reporter Dan Graziano.

The size of the contract throws into stark light just how dramatically the knee injury Bridgewater suffered a few years ago has derailed his career and his life.

Bridgewater was a first-round draft pick in 2014 and a pro bowl quarterback in 2015, but he suffered a devastating knee injury shortly before the start of the 2016 NFL season which caused him to miss the entire 2016 season and virtually all of the 2017 season as well.

By contrast, Bridgewater’s fellow first-round quarterback from the 2014 draft, Blake Bortles, is set to earn $26.5 million in guaranteed money on his next contract. And Bortles has never made a pro bowl. Another class of 2014 quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, recently signed a contract extension that contains nearly $50 million in guaranteed money.

ESPN football writer Bill Barnwell also called this a “brutal deal” for Bridgewater, also noting the competition Bridgewater is likely to face for playing time with the Jets as he seeks to rebuild his NFL career.
