SEGA Genesis classics to get official Steam Workshop support and new hub

Mods have always been nothing more than a novelty for me. Something I’ll try out once or twice before heading back into the actual experience. This is just my nature as a console gamer at heart, never really getting the chance to tool with games as a kid.

But what happens when a publisher allows you to toy with those childhood experiences, rewriting the very reality of everything you’ve ever known? That’s what SEGA Europe is announcing with a brand new initiative to give Steam Workshop support to all of its classic SEGA Genesis titles, or “Mega Drive” for the Europeans in the room.

The news comes alongside a brand new interactive 3D hub that looks so much like a reality from my childhood. A dark room deep in the night, a shining CRTV, a shelf full of video games. I guess the only difference is that I was always a Super Nintendo brat.

Still, what exactly does this mean? Well, for one thing, it means modders are going to have an easier time uploading their creations. Possibly custom Sonic the Hedgehog and other platformer levels? Perhaps greater character customization in Shining Force? Maybe a chance to actually make Ecco the Dolphin a tolerable game? No specifics yet, but SEGA Community Manager Dan Sheridan claims SEGA will have more to share soon.

@ColdPie1 we’ll be sharing more details on that next week

No word on when this will be available and if SEGA of America plans to follow. All we know is that when SEGA Europe sends out the update, it will be free for anyone who owns a SEGA Genesis classic on Steam.
