Square Enix in talks to bring Final Fantasy XIV to Xbox One

I’ll say it once, I’ll say it 10 million times until I am blue in the face. Final Fantasy XIV is the best game from the franchise in 15 years and one of the most beautiful experiences available on the video game market today. The more people who get the chance to experience it, the better, and that includes Xbox One owners who have been on the outside looking in up until now.

With Microsoft’s recent moves to start allowing cross-server play and “not leaving anyone behind,” Square Enix is more open to releasing the game on its console. Director Naoki Yoshida delivered good news about talks with Microsoft in an interview with Polygon, saying that they are underway.

Microsoft actually approached the Final Fantasy 14 team about the cross-platform opportunity. When our team reviewed the regulations that are associated with that, we realized that Microsoft may not have the experience or understanding of running an MMORPG as an online game genre just yet. The Final Fantasy 14 team has fed back to Microsoft that there are certain elements of its regulations that we would have to consider waived. We’re waiting on Microsoft’s response for that, but we are having discussions.

Excellent. Welcome aboard! However, on a more worrying note, Yoshida also addressed the issue of the rapidly aging PlayStation 3, which might not be officially supported in the near future.

At this point, we’ve already declared that we’ll continue to fully support the PS3 through the 3.x series of patches. That’s about all we can say at this point. If anything changes with that, we’ll be sure to update our players so that they are aware.

No plus, no minus. Just a deadline and no comment beyond the horizon. I wouldn’t be surprised if the PlayStation 3 version was cut following the latest round of updates. It doesn’t run particularly well, and it’s now several years removed from being cutting edge.

If you’re an Xbox One owner with an itch that can only be scratched by that unique classic Final Fantasy aesthetic, you might be a whole lot closer to it than you think. Keep an eye out for more information.
