Star Wars: The Force Awakens 3D Blu-ray reveals even more fun facts

We’re almost a full year past the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and yet we’re still learning new secrets about the film.

In a new director’s commentary included with the 3D Blu-ray release (out Nov. 15) of The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams talks at length about the movie, providing some fun nuggets of information along the way.

Everything from how scenes were reshot to acknowledging continuity errors, Abrams doesn’t hold back—except, of course, when he’s teasing story elements that have yet to be revealed.

For example, Abrams was going to reveal how Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber made its way to Maz Kanata but decided that story was best saved for later. Hence, why the movie brushes over this fact when the question is brought up.

There are plenty of other fun facts: Takodana is named after Takodanobaba, Japan; Maz’s backstory was more prominent in the original script; Abrams said that even though the shot of the TIE fighters flying in front of the sun was a continuity nightmare he didn’t care because he liked it so much.

Meanwhile, Abrams reveals that director Steven Spielberg had a lot of input about how to make key scenes better, including the fight between Rey and Kylo Ren at the end.

io9 does a terrific job of extrapolating details from the Blu-ray’s commentary, so check out that post for more.
