Tesla Model S police car? Not so fast, LAPD says

If you’ve ever been pulled over for a speeding ticket, chances are it was by a cop driving a Crown Victoria or Explorer. But in the not-so-distant-future, you might get pulled over by a Tesla Model S. That’s no joke.

The LAPD has been testing two Tesla Model S P85D fleet cars for the past year in hopes of getting a head start in the electric vehicle fad. The plan was to experiment and evaluate how practical driving EVs would be. It turns out, not so much.

The price alone of the Model S makes adapting them into the fleet an issue. A Ford Explorer costs the department about $30,000, while the Model S is typically upwards of $80,000 per car. That’s a hefty price tag to pay for electric efficiency. Not only that but current charging stations aren’t widely available, which would make fully charging the cars problematic.

“Is it practical now? No. [But] the next three to five years…not only will the industry push towards electrification, but prices will drop on the vehicles soon,” stated LAPD Police Administrator Vartan Yegiyan.

Perhaps the LAPD might be interested in Tesla’s upcoming Model 3.
