The 2019 Lincoln Continental Coach Door Edition Sold Out In 48 Hours, But More Are Coming

Lincoln’s coach-built reverse-opening long-wheelbase Continental lux sedan is a premium experience that was promised to only 80 lucky buyers. The privilege of being on the list cost these buyers $110,000, or $40,000 more than a top-of-the-line normal-door Lincoln Continental.

Lincoln announced the arrival of the car on December 17th, and by December 20th, every single one of the 80 were spoken for. The experiment was so successful that Lincoln has already committed to another limited edition run for the 2020 model year, according to the Detroit Free Press.

“Our first two calls came from New York and the West Coast, each wanted to be first,” Robert Parker, director of marketing at Lincoln, told the Freep. “One customer was one of these people who could have whatever they wanted, and he wanted to match the Lincoln with his aircraft. One guy from Tulsa has become a pen pal. I even got a Christmas card from him this year. Over Thanksgiving, he was texting me because the rumors were heating up. I’ve never even met this person. I don’t know how he got in contact with me.”

That just proves how enthusiastic buyers were about the idea of stepping out of Lincoln’s so-called coach door. The car, and all of the talk surrounding it, really resonated with the market, as Lincoln had its best sales month of the last 28 years in December. Parker described that he was surprised particularly with how the coach door car resonated with buyers under 40—not exactly Lincoln’s bread and butter.

Customers will be notified whether their order made the cut in February. The anniversary edition Lincoln is limited to buyers in the U.S. market, and delivery of the custom Cabot Coach Builders-assembled 80th anniversary edition Lincoln will begin this summer. Allegedly there is quite a demand for a similarly equipped Lincoln in Dubai and Shanghai, which surely helped spark the need for a 2020 model.
