The 2020 BMW M550i to Get 8 Series V8, Will Destroy the Last-Gen M5: Report

Last year’s introduction of the all-new BMW 5 Series left the outgoing M5 in the dust with the M550i xDrive model, powered by a 4.4-liter V8 with 455 horsepower. Bad news for last-gen M5 owners is that the 2020 M550i is going to get even more power, which means it will be even quicker.

BMW reported the F10 M5 could set a zero to 60 mph time of around 4.4 seconds, and the current-gen M550i bests that with a zero to 60 mph time of just four seconds. Now it’s going to be somewhere under four-seconds, when BMW shoves in the 530 horsepower 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 from the new M850i 8 Series under the hood, according to BMW Blog.

The report claims the acceleration could drop down to just 3.7 seconds to 60 mph for the 2020 M550i xDrive, which would smoke the old M5. It also indicates that all future BMWs designated with the “M50i” badge will get the 8 Series V8, including the X5, X6 and prospective X7 SUVs.

Why bother with the new M5 when you can get an M550i xDrive and still kick plenty of ass? The current M550i xDrive starts at $74,450, and it’s unclear if more power on the 2020 will mean more cost. We’ll see!
