The 2020 Genesis G90 Looks Okay But I’m Not Sure About the Droopy Grille

Last week, we came across a few images of a slightly camouflaged 2020 Genesis G90 luxury sedan sporting what looked like new bodywork. Now, after an event in Seoul, South Korea, Genesis has released official images of its new flagship, and yeah, that grille still looks a bit odd.

When my colleague wrote about the initial spy shots, he called the look “uninspiring,” which, I think, is fair. The Korean-spec model shown in the new press images shows Lincoln-esque taillights, very Ford Taurus-ish fender vents, and Volvo-ian headlights. Still, for the most part, it actually looks okay, and I like the new, more aggressive hood:

In the rear, the taillights wrap around the entire tail end of the car, and ditch the old G90’s Mercedes S-Class look in favor of something that would look at home on a Lincoln Continental and make you forget that this luxury model was once a Hyundai Equus. It looks nice:

The “Crest” grille at the front of the new G90, though—it may take me some time to get used to that odd, wine glass-bowl shape:

Interior changes look minimal, but the old car had a stunning interior, so I’m not sure anyone’s complaining, there.

Genesis doesn’t mention any powertrain updates in its press release, so there’s a decent chance the car will continue offer the current model’s 365 horsepower 3.3-liter turbo V6 and 420 horsepower 5.0 liter V8.

Really, it appears that the biggest changes are to the exterior design, and of those, the most drastic new bis is that grille that appears to sag in the middle to a strange point. Maybe it’ll look better in person, but I’m not sold on it. I prefer my grilles to to look strong and purposeful. Not saggy.

Hopefully I’ll have a chance to gaze at the new face this week at the LA Auto Show.
