The Next BMW Small Sedan Will Be FWD Just as We Feared

The long-rumored upcoming BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe was finally confirmed by the automaker Wednesday, with a teaser image revealing a cool green color and a press release announcing the car will sadly be based on a front-wheel drive platform.

It’s hard to be too upset at this news, as we’ve had plenty of time to prepare for the 2 Series going front-wheel drive thanks to all of the rumors for some time. But it still stings.

According to the press release, the production car will be revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this year, but Autocar reports a concept carcould show up sometime before that.

While the new 2 Series Gran Coupe will be a global car in the premium compact segment, BMW will also debut a new 1 Serieslater this year as well, though it’s unclear if that model will come to the U.S.

Previous reports claimed that a new 2 Series Coupe would remain rear-wheel drive, the sedan or Gran Coupe would go front-wheel drive, and that it wasn’t likely there would be another convertible, which is sad for me, a person who likes convertibles.

Here’s hoping the new Gran Coupe at least gets an all-wheel drive performance model, though its chances of being as rear-biased as the all-wheel drive systems on the new 5 Series and 3 Series seem a little slim.

Now that the worst news is out of the way, let’s just pray BMW didn’t go too crazy with the styling of the new car. I’m looking at you, kidney grille.
