The Buick GL8 is a big luxury minivan that we don’t get in the U.S., and once you see these stunning interior photos of a new concept variant, you’ll realize that this is a damn shame.

Buick, the brand for folks who still yearn for over-stuffed burgundy cloth seats, recently showed off a concept version of its Chinese-market GL8 Avenir minivan called the GL8 Avenir Concept, and—per the press photos shared by GM Authority—it’s basically as close as a van can get to a palace on wheels.

I mean, just look at these thrones:

Here’s another angle:

And there’s more opulence in front of those rear seats:

The driver and front passenger aren’t exactly slumming it, either:

This is just a concept, of course, but it’s worth mentioning that the current version of the GL8 Avenir MPV looks pretty darned nice inside, as well:

And in case you’re curious, here’s what the current car’s front end looks like:

As you can see when comparing the image above with the one below, the Buick GL8 Avenir Concept that the brand debuted at its “2019 Buick Brand Night” in Shanghai last month has a different front end than the one currently in production. The new one, developed by the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center, or PATAC—a joint venture between General Motors and Chinese automaker Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, or SAIC—has a bit of a water-theme going on, with its front end “inspired by rolling waves” and the seats incorporating a “waterfall” design, according to GM’s press release.

The new GL8 Avenir Concept looks much like the current GL8 Avenir, but with updated front and rear fascias and a freshened interior that appears to bring this Buick into Maybach territory—which isn’t a phrase I ever thought I’d say.

Of the concepts that Buick showed off in Shanghai, this one, the brand says, is “the closest to mass production” and “hints at Buicks to come.” I can totally live with that. And also in that.
