Thor: Ragnarok adds Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum to cast

We already knew Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk would appear in Thor: Ragnarok, and now additional big-name actors are being added to the project. Marvel on Friday confirmed the addition of Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, and Karl Urban, the latter of whom people know from the new Star Trek trilogy.

As the rumors suggested, Blanchett will play Hela, a frightening villain who is also known as the Asgardian Goddess of Death. Goldblum joins the cast as Grandmaster, a character of unknown origin Marvel describes as “eccentric.” Thompson, meanwhile, will play Valkyrie, while Urban is set to play Skurge, yet another villainous Asgardian.

“The continuation of the epic Thor franchise will be powerful and unique, and with the additions of Cate, Jeff, Tessa, Karl, and Mark to the cast we have the makings of his most dangerous and heroic adventure yet,” said Marvel’s Kevin Feige.

No official plot synopsis for Thor: Ragnarok was revealed though we have heard rumors about the film taking some inspiration from the Planet Hulk storyline, mixed with more family drama on Asgard. Notice that Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster is not involved though Marvel already explained why.

Returning to the fray is Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled for a July 28, 2017 release.
