Uber promises New Yorkers cheap rides during Manhattan rush hour

UberPool already offers cheap rides if you’re willing to share your car with a stranger. Now the company is rolling out an even better deal during peak travel times in Manhattan.

Starting on Monday, any UberPool rides that start and end in Manhattan will cost a flat fee of $5, though there are a few restrictions. The deal is only available during prime travel times, which includes mornings from 7-10 a.m. and evenings from 5-8 p.m. on Monday through Friday. It’s also limited to trips below 110th street, so you’re out of luck if you work or live any further uptown.

Uber notes that you may have to walk a block or two to meet your UberPool. You’ll also get dropped off a few blocks away from your final destination. The company says this should help streamline the operation to save time for everyone. The new offer should show up automatically on your phone but, if it doesn’t, make sure you have the latest version of Uber downloaded.

The latest update brings Uber even closer to competing directly with public transportation. UberPool is quickly becoming a more convenient version of the city’s bus and subway system, though, even at $5, it costs almost twice as much per ride.
