Vaughn Gittin Jr’s 900-HP Ford Mustang Chewed Through Three Sets of Tires Drifting the Nürburgring

The first question I had when I watched the short video of Vaughn Gittin Jr. drifting the Nürburgring was how many sets of tires did he go through? Three, the answer is three sets of Nitto NT555 G2s.

Monster Energy released the longer cut of the 12.9-mile drift lap video today, along with some background information about the lap itself. The highest speed the Mustang reached was 150 mph (gearing limited). And burning through those three sets of tires amounted to about 90,000 miles of regular driving.

Pro car photographer, Larry Chen, was also there as part of the film crew. He wrote in an Instagram post that a van followed the Mustang with tires and would stop to help swap out for fresh ones. The camera car was apparently a Volvo V70 R Polestar.

The drift car itself is Gittin Jr.’s 2018 Ford Mustang RTR, powered by a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 that puts out between 700 to 900 horsepower. It has a six-speed sequential gearbox, carbon fiber body panels and weighs 3,000 pounds.

The video shows “almost every turn,” and is a little over seven minutes long. So, if you wanted to experience some sustained Mustang screaming from your computer or phone, check it out.
