What comes after Star Wars: Episode IX? Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy weighs in

Disney and Lucasfilm have it mapped out: First, we’ll see Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on Dec. 16, followed by Episode VIII at the end of next year. Next, Han Solo’s spin-off will be released, and then we’ll wrap up the newest saga trilogy with Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX.

But after that? Well, Disney and Lucasfilm aren’t really sure.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy talks about what the studio has planned for the future. Namely, what’s to come after Episode IX hits theaters in 2019.

According to Kennedy, the future of the Star Wars universe will depend on Rogue One. If the response is good, more spin-off films will be planned. If not? Well, Kennedy says they’ll have to figure it out.

“That’s a conversation going on right now, too,” Kennedy told Entertainment Weekly. “I have to honestly tell you, could we do nothing but standalones? Sure. But I don’t know. We are looking at all of that.”

There are a lot of possibilities to choose from but no ideas are set in stone just yet.

“We are planning to sit down in January, since we will have had The Force Awakens released, now Rogue One, and we’ve finished shooting Episode VIII. We have enough information where we can step back a little bit and say, What are we doing? What do we feel is exciting? And what are some of the things we want to explore?”

As for that meeting in January, Kennedy says many of the creators behind the recent movies will sit down and hash out which direction the universe should go in. Whether that’s only standalone movies or another trilogy remains to be seen.

Will Ewan McGregor return as Obi-Wan?

One possible standalone could focus on Obi-Wan Kenobi, with actor Ewan McGregor returning to the role. He has already expressed interest, so it’s not like it would be difficult getting him to sign on for the project.

But, again, it all depends on how Rogue One performs next month. Based on everything we’ve seen, it’s going to be a huge hit; it’s already tracking for a massive opening weekend. We’ll find out how the movie does when it hits theaters on Dec. 16.
