Windows 10 update to remove controversial Wi-Fi sharing feature

Microsoft packed a lot of great features into Windows 10, but there were a few exceptions. For example, Wi-Fi Sense included the option to share your internet password with all your contacts automatically. Now the company says it’s ditching the feature in an upcoming update.

The password-sharing feature may sound like a clever time-saver in theory, but it could mean inadvertently revealing sensitive information with someone you don’t know very well. Microsoft notes that this Wi-Fi Sense option isn’t very popular, so updating it would be a waste of time and money. However, another Wi-Fi Sense feature that connects to hotspots automatically will remain intact.

The latest update, which was released this week as a Windows 10 Insider preview, also offers some improvements to Microsoft’s Edge browser. That includes real-time web notifications from participating websites and swipe navigation for moving back and forward.

Regular Windows 10 users should see these changes arrive in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update this summer.
