  • Multiple MLB insiders are reporting that a deal between the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins for Giancarlo Stanton is in place.
  • The Marlins would receive Starlin Castro and good, but not top, prospects.
  • The deal still needs to be approved by Stanton and he needs to pass a physical, but those are considered technicalities.

The New York Yankees and Miami Marlins have reached a deal on a trade involving MVP slugger Giancarlo Stanton, according to multiple reports.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports was the first to report that a deal was in place. Ken Rosenthal of The Atlantic also reported that the trade is happening.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Marlins will receive Yankees second baseman Starlin Castro and “good but not top prospects” in the trade.

Jon Morosi of the MLB Network reports that the deal is not quite done yet. It still needs to be approved by Stanton, who has a full no-trade clause in his contract, and he must pass a physical. Both of those would appear to be technicalities at this point.

It was reported on Friday that Stanton narrowed the list of teams for which he would approve a trade to just four teams, including the Yankees. That came after he rejected trades to both the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals. After those reports, talks between the Yankees and Marlins intensified late on Friday.

A deal for Stanton was considered a long shot at first with the Yankees hoping to keep their 2018 payroll under the $197 million luxury-tax level. Stanton just completed the third year of his 13-year, $325 million contract, but 2018 is the first season in which his salary starts to hit superstar level. After making $14.5 million this past season, his 2018 salary will be $25 million.

The trade would unite Stanton with Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez, giving the Yankees arguably the most formidable offense in baseball. Those three players combined to hit 144 home last season.
