Yooka-Laylee’s multiplayer modes revealed

When Yooka-Laylee launches on April 11, 2017, it’ll arrive with two unique takes on local multiplayer. Playtonic Games and Team17 relayed the information in a press release last night embargoed for this morning.

For a sort of cooperative play, a second player will be able to plug in a controller and take over the “Bee Team.” The press release notes that they’ll be able to, “grab quills and collect and store butterflies for when Yooka and Laylee are really in need of health or energy boost. They can even stop some traps to help the player traverse past particularly tricky obstacles!”

The second multiplayer mode is interesting, too. It’s called Rextro’s Arcade, and it features eight local multiplayer arcade games. Of course, you’ll be able to tackle them slowly solo once you find the arcade in the game. Here’s what the release says about the games that will be available.

Compete in the Glaciators brawler arena to collect the most quills, race to the finish line in Kartos Karting, fight for the flag in Blag the Flag, blast away the enemies in shoot-em-up Gun-let Run and traverse both Jobstacle Course and Hurdle Hijinx, plus more! These are just some of the exciting games you can expect to find in Rextro’s Arcade.

Word has it that those who are able to find and collect the special play coins within Yooka-Laylee’s extensive single player campaign will even be able to power up the arcade cabinets located within the mysterious book worlds for a chance to win some sought-after pagies!

I didn’t even think Yooka-Laylee would have multiplayer…

Well, I’ll mark this a bonus. I hadn’t really pegged this game for the multiplayer sort. So, it’s nice to see this surprise unveiled pretty close to launch.

Yooka-Laylee will sell for the PC, PlayStaiton 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on April 11, 2017.
