Activision Blizzard’s bringing live eSports to Facebook’s streaming service

Get ready for some Call of Duty, Overwatch and DotA 2 all up in your Facebook feed. Activision Blizzard has announced that they’ll be using Facebook’s live streaming tech to broadcast tournaments.

The efforts will start as the company streams the MLG Anaheim Open beginning on June 10, 2016. That event plays host to a Call of Duty: Black Ops III tournament, and MLG.tv’s live broadcast will be played on Facebook.

Variety heard this from Dan Reed, Facebook Head of Global Sports Partnerships.

“Esports is an exciting space and continues to be a growing priority for us…With over 1.6 billion people on the platform and a growing suite of VOD and live-streaming products that partners can use to increase engagement, Facebook is uniquely positioned to help eSports fans connect around exciting moments and great eSports content.”

If used properly, bringing eSports to Facebook by way of the platform’s streaming service could generate a ton of new interest from gamers who might not otherwise pay any attention.

This move could be huge. We’ll find out starting this June.
