Apple and Google may soon change how you watch NFL football

Earlier rumors have already suggested that Apple and Google are trying to stream Thursday Night NFL games during the 2016 season. Now a new report from Reuters gives us some more insight into how that might start to happen.

Turns out the NFL is currently looking to livestream all three of the 2016 NFL games played in London, and Apple and Google are interested in providing those streams to viewers. They might help serve as a test before something bigger, like NFL’s Thursday Night Games.

If you remember, Yahoo streamed the the Bills vs. Jaguars game from London in 2015. Reuters said it doesn’t know if the NFL is trying to bundle the trio of games or split them between Apple and Google. It seems plausible one company might have two and the other one, or one company might take the trio.

No matter who wins, this is going to push a new way to watch football. Currently, viewers can subscribe to NFL Game Pass to stream games onto their Android or iOS devices, but that isn’t free. If Apple or Google win out, they could potentially offer it free to customers while also making money on embedded ads.

We’ll probably know a lot more ahead of the 2016 season, during which London will be home to games including the Jacksonville Jaguars vs. the Indianapolis Colts, the Cincinnati Bengals vs. the Washington Redskins and the St. Louis Rams vs. a yet-undecided team
