Blake Griffin may have a broken hand, and questions are being raised about how it happened

Blake Griffin has a “suspected fracture” in his right hand and has been sent home by the Los Angeles Clippers, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein and Ramona Shelburne.

A source told ESPN the injury would keep Griffin sidelined “a matter of weeks, as opposed to days.”

The news quickly raised questions and speculation about how the injury occurred, as there was no announcement from the team and Griffin has been sidelined since late December with a quadriceps injury. Sources told Stein that the injury happened during an “undisclosed team-related incident.”

The nature of the injury and the apparent secrecy over how it happened have opened the door to speculation, including that he may have punched something or somebody.

“It certainly sounds like a locker room fight or something like that,” ESPN’s Chris Broussard said on ESPN Radio. “But we don’t know at this point.”

Broussard later laughed after noting that “it will be interesting to see what they say occurred to lead to this hand injury.” The suggestion here is that if something like a fight did occur, the team may not be completely open about the details of the incident that led to the injury.

[UPDATE] Dan Woike of the Orange County Register reports that Griffin was involved in an incident with a “team staff member.”
