Closing background iOS apps won’t improve your battery life

Apple iOS 9 Preview-6

There’s a tip that goes around every so often that claims closing all the apps that are open in the background on your iOS device improves performance and battery life. But according to Apple senior vice president of software Craig Federighi, it’s just not true.

iOS is super efficient at managing apps in the background so that your device doesn’t get bogged down, and you battery isn’t drained by an app that’s quietly running away out of sight. So it doesn’t matter whether you have 10 or 100 open, your device should still run well.

Yet some still claim that closing background apps on a frequent basis is necessary. Fortunately, one Apple fan got confirmation that this was false in an email from Federighi.

“Do you quit your iOS multitasking apps frequently, and is this necessary for battery life?” the fan asked. “Just wanting to put this controversy to rest.” Federighi replied with a simple “No and No. Thanks for being an Apple customer!”

So, there you have it. You don’t need to go through the app switcher and swipe all those apps away at the end of every day, because it makes no difference… unless the sheer thought of all those apps open on your iPhone keeps you away at night.
