Film Fondue: Black Panther has found its director

Following a busy week at CES at the beginning of January, the world of entertainment seemed to kick into overdrive. We had rumors covering the entire spectrum, too—and that’s the fun of it. It would be mighty boring if the Internet was devoid of leaked reports and speculation. That goes for any industry, not just entertainment.

Below are the rumors and reports that you may have missed.

Jumanji

Jumanji remake gets a director

Whether we want it or not, the Jumanji remake is happening—and Deadline says Jake Kasdan has been chosen to direct. Kasdan has previously directed movies such as New Girl, Bad Teacher, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Again, why is this being remade? A sequel might suffice, but you can’t top the 1995 classic. Captain America: Civil War

In a fresh interview with Collider, the Russo brothers revealed their approach to Civil War, saying they’re breaking up the more somber tone with humor from characters like Ant-Man and Spider-Man:

They’re not tied to the central arc of the movie with the same motivation as the other characters, so they can be lighter. I think there are a lot of lighter moments because there are much darker moments as well. We did have to work very hard at that. [Collider]

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 script is finished

On Facebook, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn revealed he has finished writing the sequel’s script.

“I always make very tiny changes along the way, but this is essentially the final draft,” Gunn said.

Additionally, Gunn teased that there are some actors lined up to play roles that haven’t yet been revealed.

Alien: Covenant

According to director Ridley Scott, he’s aiming for a “pretty hard R” rating with Alien: Covenant, saying he’s hoping to top the scariest moments from the original Alien. [ComingSoon]

Wonder Woman’s mother has been cast

Several reports claim Connie Nielsen has been picked to play Hippolyta, otherwise known as the mother of Wonder Woman. Warner Bros. has not commented on the rumors. [Variety]

Ryan Coogler to direct Black Panther

Ryan Coogler, who rose to fame with 2013’s Fruitvale Station, and directed last year’s Creed, has been chosen to direct Black Panther. The film stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, and is scheduled for a Feb. 16, 2018 release. [Marvel]

Maz Kanata kicks butt in deleted scene

In one deleted scene revealed by the VFX supervisors for The Force Awakens, it’s revealed that Maz Kanata was shown using her Force powers, but it wound up getting cut.

There was a particular part of a scene that never made it, where they go underneath the castle and they’re going into the underground passageways, and stormtroopers are coming down the stairs and Max uses her powers to collapse the ceiling. [Collider]

No Red Hulk in Civil War

According to the Russo brothers, General Ross will not turn into the Red Hulk in Civil War.

There always a chance at Marvel that you can see anything. But there, uh, let’s say… there is no Red Hulk in Civil War. General Ross has a big presence in Civil War. He’s a character who was ham-fisted in his approach in The Incredible Hulk… and that’s probably a polite way to put it. And I think he’s learned from his over-aggressiveness in that movie and he’s become more of a politician. [CBR]
