Final Fantasy VII Remake’s story approach compared to Final Fantasy XIII’s

We’re still not entirely clear on how Square Enix plans to release Final Fantasy VII Remake beyond the fact that it is episodic in nature. A recent interview with Game Informer might suggest that we’ll be getting full releases, similarly to how Final Fantasy XIII ended up working.

Yoshinori Kitase, longtime Final Fantasy producer and director of Final Fantasy VII, recently opened up on how he plans to approach the game’s structure, not at all shy about the comparisons to Final Fantasy XIII.

“It will essentially be a full-scale game for each part of the multi-part series. In XIII, each installment told the story from a different angle. It was kind of like approaching an unknown territory, in a sense. Whereas with Final Fantasy VII Remake, we already have a preexisting story, so it wouldn’t really make sense if that isn’t encompassed in the multi-part series… So if we’re just looking at each of these parts, one part should be on par with the scale of one Final Fantasy XIII game.”

So we’ll be looking at full length games that take different views on a story that already exists? I’m down with that. I’ve stated before I have no desire for a basic graphical overhaul of the original, and I more than welcome a new look into the events that unfold. Kitase sounds like he isn’t burdened by fans demanding he not touch a thing, either.

“I, along with Nomura-san and Nojima-san – who are involved with the remake – were involved with the original Final Fantasy VII. We were the people who created it, so in that sense, we don’t think anything is untouchable.”

Wow, Final Fantasy has always been ripe for Star Wars comparisons, and now its creators have become regular George Lucases themselves! But I welcome the changes this time around since the original Final Fantasy VII is still available and very much enjoyable for future generations.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released for the PlayStation 4 first. No release window has been announced.
