Google “Hands Free” mobile payment app is mind-blowingly awesome

Forget about Android Pay. Google has a new mobile payments app that’s even more exciting. Hands Free is available now in one test market, offering a way to pay without ever taking your phone out of your pocket.

If you pass by a store that uses Hands Free, your phone will recognize it automatically using the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and location services built into the device. Then, when you get to the register, just say “I’ll pay with Google” and tell the cashier your initials. The store or restaurant can then verify your identity based on a picture you already uploaded to your profile.

In some locations, Hands Free will be even easier to use thanks to in-store cameras that can confirm your identity automatically. Google also promises that any photos taken of you for this service will be deleted automatically.

Hands Free is available now for iOS and Android, but only works in the South Bay region of San Francisco. Google is teaming up with McDonalds and Papa John’s at launch, along with a few local restaurants. You’ll get $5 off your first purchase if you use Hands Free, by the way.
