iPhone 7 Plus unlikely to have dual-lens camera due to “immature technology”

Based on the information that’s available, Apple’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus won’t be much of an upgrade over previous generations, with the only real difference being the larger model’s dual-lens camera. But, according to a new report out of China, that might not even happen.

A source on Weibo, citing internal Foxconn staff, claims the dual-lens camera we’ve been hearing so much about has been cancelled due to “immature technology.” It’s unclear what that means exactly but it’s likely Apple wasn’t happy with the quality produced by the new setup, causing the company to fall back to a single lens.

We’ve seen a lot of evidence suggesting the iPhone 7 Plus would include a dual-lens camera, likely similar in execution to what we saw with the LG G5, so today’s report comes as a bit of a shock. Turns out, whatever plans we thought Apple had are unlikely to happen. If that’s the case, then this year’s upgrade might be even less exciting than we thought.

According to previous reports, Apple is banking on 2017 as the year of the iPhone, where it’s expected to introduce a new handset with a complete redesign and the latest mobile advancements. Of course, we won’t know for sure what Apple has planned until this fall, when the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are expected to be announced.

If you were dead set on picking an iPhone 7 Plus up because of its dual-lens camera, prepare to be disappointed.
