We’re expecting the iPhone 8 to be Apple’s most technologically advanced smartphone, with a new design, improved screen, and a fingerprint sensor embedded beneath the display. According to one Cowen and Company analyst, the device may also feature facial recognition.
Timothy Arcuri provided his two cents in a new research note, detailing the different features supposedly coming to the upcoming iPhone.
“Features appear to include some form of facial/gesture recognition supported by a new laser sensor and an infrared sensor mounted near the front-facing camera and, as expected, should also finally include wireless charging,” Arcuri said.
Additionally, Arcuri claims Apple is going to launch a third 5.8-inch iPhone that sports a wraparound OLED display, along with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor under the glass. This has popped up as a rumor as far back as the beginning of last year, so Arcuri’s claim isn’t new. However, the frequency of the rumor, along with Arcuri’s note, further adds weight to it finally happening.
The best iPhone ever
Several of Arcuri’s claims have already been reported on, though the facial recognition isn’t something we’ve heard before. As Business Insider notes, Apple acquired Primesense, an infrared sensor company, in 2013, which may hint at what’s to come.
Apple CEO Tim Cook previously expressed interest in augmented reality, and Apple’s Primesense acquisition may be integral to adding AR to the iPhone. Apparently, the 5.8-inch model will be one of three iPhones Apple is expected to release later this year.
As a result, Arcuri expects Apple’s next iPhone will result in a record number of shipments, triggering a “super cycle” of upgraders.
