We’re only a few months away from the release of Kong: Skull Island and we finally have our first clear look at the giant gorilla. The look is familiar, staying close to the 1933 classic, but there is a slight hint of danger to him.
This creative decision certainly plays a role in the story of the movie, according to director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and it was done purposefully. He took the chance to talk about what went into the decision to go with a familiar look instead of a radical redesign, but still added certain elements that invoke a distrust between him and humans.
Vogt-Robert talked about the picture above and the context surrounding it:
“That sequence comes from a point in the movie where you’re not quite sure who Kong is, what his purpose is, how people should perceive him,” revealed Vogt-Roberts in an Entertainment Weekly interview. “Through the folly of man, where our initial instinct is to attack anything that is a known quantity, both sides jump the gun, Kong and the humans, and it kicks off a relatively messy engagement. At first, of course, you’re going to perceive something like that as a terrible threat and monster – the physicality of him alone.”
The movie is still a mystery
Little is known about the plot of the movie, but one thing we do know from the early trailer is that a group of humans stumble upon King Kong on his home island, and the encounter doesn’t exactly involve a warm embrace. From Vogt-Roberts’ remarks, the final look of the giant gorilla was meant to inspire an overwhelming fear, something that was very palpable in the faces of Tim Hiddleston and Brie Larson in the first trailer.
Kong: Skull Island is in theaters March 10, 2016.
